Big Dish Satellite Repair

                                     Quick Help Guide

                                             Antenna Check list

           Seven step Dish-Antenna Check Procedure:
1. Check post for any movement - rock back and forth
2. Check post with a level - Should be plumb ( at least East to West )
3. Grab edge of dish on actuator side pull or push with direction
of normal dish movement. look for any loose bolts at motor
(excessive play less than 3/16" is ok. closer to 1/4" too much)
measure in W7 or C1 position (arm extended)  Replace Actuator
4. At the motor ball joint - grease or lube until moving freely (both ends)
5. If nuts are loose on mounting bolts - double nut with 3/4" type
6. Remove feed cover and check for loose bolts at lnb assembly
7. Blue cover on outside of feed assembly? No cover? Look in feed for Bees or obstructions?

Dish Count Errors:  Always adjusting East/West Tuning?

Any excessive movement in dish-transition will cause count errors.   Check all of the above 7 step antenna check first.  Replace actuator sensor or Replace Actuator

No Odd or Even channels

Most common cause is defective servo motor (small blue box at feed assembly) 3 wires - red (5 Volts) black (ground) and white (pulse).   Moved the receiver lately? Look for loose wires at back of receiver and loose or frayed ends? (the three wire group should have continuity to servo motor at dish). The servo could be tested at the receiver.  Replace Replace Servo

Loud Squeal when changing channels

This is caused by defective servo motor ( usually blue in color mini-motor assembly located on feed horn) This is a common problem. It's a good idea to get another one so as to make your neighbors happy. (high pitch squeal)  Replace Servo

Sparkle on most all Satellites

Alignment or weak-lnb:

The lnb is bad if you get channel 1-9 ok and 10-24 is poor. (or visa versa) Replace as necessary and make sure the blue circular cover on scaler feed is there. There are three or four support legs holding the feed. Tighten as needed. Check for obstructions in circular feed assembly (hornets nests etc... no water please ) Re-attach scaler cover.  Check for loose bolts at dish mount assembly and also lnb as it attaches to feed assembly. Tighten as needed. Should fix problem. ReplaceLnb

Loud  Noise outside

When changing channels: defective servo-motor replace as necessary. Loud squeal when going to satellites. Use light oil on extended part of actuator assembly. If the noise occurs when moving dish, there is wear inside the actuator. Remove down to thread stock and regrease,   or take the easier route and replace the motor.  "Noise occurs when dish moves" is caused by the motor requiring internal cleaning and lubrication. (make sure ball joint motor bracket swivels. lift motor up, should move freely) Excessive rust associated with noise.

No Dish movement or Actuator Error

Moved Receiver lately? Check for broken or loose wires, Reprogram as necessary. No Dc Voltage at Motor wires when changing satellite position, look for a loose wire at receiver, large Red and White wire should be 36Volts when selecting new satellite. No 36volts Dc when using remote to change sats.  Problem in Receiver. Look for loose wires to the motor leads (large Red and White or small Orange, Green, Brown) check all connections  for continuity at either end. (motor or receiver) Hint:  twist leads together, two at a  time and measure resistance at opposite end with ohm meter. Since the sensor circuit only requires two leads you have a spare, in case you find one line open or broken. The worst case is replacing entire ribbon line.  Reconnect when complete. If voltage is present but no movement.  Replace Actuator

Dish moves  No Pix on all Satellites

First do 7 step Antenna check:   Measure voltage at lnb for 15-17 Volts DC at connector. If no  power is present, broken connection ( or no b+ power from receiver)   Measure receiver end, (Sat Input) for same voltage. If present, the coax line is cut. You might try using the other ku coax (the extra coax line on the ribbon cable) If you have Ku just swap both ends at the lnbs and rcvr, for test purposes. Then, replace single coax or ribbon cable as needed. If all seem normal, Replace lnb

Some Satellites - Sparkle most all Channels

This is usually caused by mis-aligned dish. Some easy tests are to go to the sat.  that is weak, and have someone watch the picture quality while you lift the center edge of dish up about an inch for 5 sec. and pull down on the center edge same amount of time.   If there is more sparkle both ways, alignment is ok. (for that sat) Next, take a visual test, looking thru the dish, aligning the feed to the center (finding the look angle) Take a visual at that angle. Are there obstructions?  This is usually the problem.

Receiver Related Trouble

Need a Dc volt meter to make some checks as outlined at Receiver Problems.  Go to your instruction manual for specific problems associated with it.  Here is a list of 24 manufacturers and a complete guide on how to use each.  24 Receiver Manufacturers Setup Guides
